Caterpillar's Clean Diesel 2007 On-Highway Emissions Solution

Utilizing a Cat C13 ACERT engine, the company displayed a 2007 emissions compliant truck at an event in West Point, Virginia where President Bush highlighted key elements of his energy policy.

"Caterpillar applauds President Bush for his commitment and support of clean diesel initiatives," said Doug Oberhelman, Caterpillar Group President with responsibility for the company's power systems business. "The on-highway standards for 2007 will help to provide cleaner air for our environment. While these standards present an enormous technological challenge, Caterpillar is fully prepared to provide its customers with a solution that preserves reliability, durability and fuel economy."

Caterpillar has pledged to provide hundreds of 2007 compliant truck engines to truck fleet customers this summer so they will have the opportunity to field test this new technology well ahead of the rigorous 2007 emissions deadline.

Caterpillar was the first engine manufacturer to offer clean diesel engines certified to meet EPA's tougher 2004 standards, which require more stringent testing to demonstrate lower emissions over longer periods of engine operation. Currently more than 200,000 on-highway engines featuring ACERT Technology are powering trucks, accumulating some 40 million miles a day while delivering the products, goods, and supplies that help keep America's economy running.

In addition to meeting emissions requirements, Caterpillar customers have experienced superior fuel economy for their fleets using engines featuring ACERT Technology. "We are running more than 200 trucks with Cat engines using ACERT Technology, and that's a big part of why our fleet fuel mileage has improved from about 6.0 to 6.5 miles per gallon," said John Liberkowski, director of purchasing and fleet maintenance for New Century Transportation of Westhampton, New Jersey. "With fuel prices today, that's a huge difference because every tenth of a mile saves us $1.2 million in fuel costs."

"Caterpillar has invested more than $1 billion in research and development for ACERT and other clean diesel projects to help our customers meet today's standards, and future regulations," Oberhelman said. "Caterpillar customers know they have a 2007 emissions solution using ACERT Technology which will work hand-in-hand with the Bush administration's upcoming low sulfur diesel fuel regulations," said Oberhelman.

ACERT is a differentiated, breakthrough technology that reduces emissions at the point of combustion. The technology capitalizes on Caterpillar's proven leadership in engine electronics, fuel injection systems and combustion technology. All Caterpillar on-highway truck and bus engines now in production are equipped with ACERT Technology, which also provides a foundation to meet future emission regulations for the company's construction and mining machines and power generation units.

For 80 years, Caterpillar Inc. has been building the world's infrastructure and, in partnership with its worldwide dealer network, is driving positive and sustainable change on every continent. With 2004 sales and revenues of $30.25 billion, Caterpillar is a technology leader and the world's leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines and industrial gas turbines...

Diesel Truck Engine Cat C-16

Cat C-16 Diesel Truck Engine

Caterpillar C-16 Truck Engines offer a wide operating range and high torque rise which promotes the use of transmissions with fewer gears. Even with this built-in feature, heavy/specialty haulers must remember their trucks should be geared to achieve the appropriate compromise between startability and desired road speed. Typical loads of 80 000 Ib or less are less affected by improper drive train specing than are heavy haulers. In general, either application shares one similar recommendation — gear fast/run slow is essential for good fuel consumption. If any of the following conditions are present, special attention should be given to proper transmission and axle specifications. A complete Caterpillar Truck Engine Pro (TEP) C-16 analysis is available from your local Caterpillar or truck dealer.

Caterpillar's C Series Hydraulic Excavators Cat 320C L

Hydraulic Excavators Cat 320C L

The C Series excavators from Caterpillar (Cat 320C L) offer improved performance through increased horsepower and hydraulic flow, enhanced controllability and a new cab and interior layout for optimum operator efficiency. Cat 312C and Cat 315C replace the Caterpillar 312B and 315B and are available with long undercarriages-the Caterpillar 312C L and the 315C L. Caterpillar 312C L weighs about 28,970 lbs and the 315C L weighs about 36,840 lbs.

Cat 312C has 90 hp and the 315C has 110 hp-more than 11 per cent more power at the flywheel than the previous model. All models use the open-centre, two-pump hydraulic system and the Cat 312C and Cat 315C have increased hydraulic flows of six per cent and 13 per cent respectively. The hydraulic cross-sensing system improves productivity, the company says, with faster implement speeds and quicker, stronger pivot turns.

Caterpillar's 320C L Utility hydraulic excavator offers the same level of performance as the Cat 320C L excavator and has a smaller swing radius-6'7"-that falls within the track length and makes the Cat 320C L Utility ideal for use in logging road construction and other space-restricted sites. Operating weight of the 320C L Utility is about 50,700 lbs.

It has a 70 per cent heavier counterweight, net power of 138 hp produced by a Cat 3066 turbo-charged, six-cylinder engine and high torque at medium to low speeds, making for fuel efficiency and reduced sound levels.

Caterpillar H140D s Hydraulic Hammer

Caterpillar® introduces Caterpillar H140DS hydraulic hammer, the first of a new generation of work tools for the construction, demolition, mining and aggregates industries. The hammer is built on the strengths of its predecessor model, Caterpillar H140C s, but incorporates many improvements that enhance productivity and extend wear life.

CAT H140D Hydraulic Hammer

Caterpillar H140D s is ideally matched to Cat® 325C and 330C hydraulic excavators. It is also compatible with a Cat 322C or similarly-sized excavator. The hammer measures 103.9 inches from the top plate to the tip of the tool. Its operating weight is 2 350 kg. It can be equipped with up to seven different tools for maximum versatility.

The hammer’s operating cycle has been redesigned to improve performance and simplify service. Impact frequency is 350 to 600 blows per minute - 25 to 30% higher than the previous design. The additional blow energy and frequency translate into faster, more effective material penetration and higher productivity. The new design also contains fewer parts, reducing the time required for machine setup, troubleshooting and hammer service.

The accumulator on Caterpillar H140D s can now be checked and recharged without removing the hammer from the machine, significantly improving uptime. The pressure control valve can also be adjusted without being removed from the hammer power cell.

Caterpillar H140D Hammer

In addition to all the new features, Caterpillar H140D s retains the best attributes of the C-Series hammer. Standard sound suppression improves operator comfort and environmental protection. A heavy-duty suspension system protects the hammer and carrier from recoil forces. A dust seal keeps dirt out of the housing, reducing wear on the power cell and other components. The lower tool bushing uses a slip-fit design for easy installation and can be rotated to double service life.

Caterpillar D2 Diesel Tractor, 1938

Caterpillar D2 diesel engine required a gas fueled pony motor to crank the diesel up to speed. The pony motor originally was recoil starting, but later models were electric start.

Caterpillar D2 Tractor

The operator would start the pony motor and when the diesel engine was up to running speed and hot enough, about 15 minutes, the operator would turn on the diesel fuel valve and, hopefully, the fuel would fire and Cat D2 engine would run start running. The operator would shut off the gas flow to the pony motor and release the clutch to disengage it from the diesel engine. It was a little more complicated than this, what with releasing the decomp and other manipulations...

* A waste-gated, water-cooled turbocharger that also improves air flow and reduces emissions.
* A mechanically actuated, electronically controlled unit injection system that delivers micro-bursts of fuel to the combustion chamber - just prior to and after the main injection - improving control over emissions.
* A 32-bit ADEM® IV control system that manages the fuel injection process and other power train operations with precision and accuracy, reducing emissions, while boosting performance and maximizing component life.

This combination of technologies makes the engine in Cat 836H clean, quiet, fuel efficient and compliant with US Environmental Protection Agency Tier 3 standards.

The engine incorporates other valuable improvements. Straight-thread o-ring connection points throughout the block replace the traditional pipe thread ports, delivering leak-free performance, despite the engine's high internal pressures. The one-piece, gray-iron block has generous ribbing for extra stiffness and heavy bearing bulkheads to improve rigidity and strength when the crankshaft turns. A pendulum absorber drive gear reduces torsional load throughout the gear train, improving reliability and wear life. A newly designed head gasket, made of graphite and steel composite, seals the combustion chamber with better rigidity and wear capability. A one-piece, all-steel piston design maintains structural integrity, despite high compression ratios in the combustion chamber. Larger piston pins, connecting rods and rod bearings enhance durability. Metallurgical improvements to the rod bearing also contribute to longer wear life. The accessory drive sits on a cast iron housing and has a serpentine belt with automatic tensioning to ensure proper performance over time.

Other improvements

Other new features on Cat 836H improve performance, life, ease of operation and serviceability. Inside the cab, the controller has been redesigned for easier, more convenient operation. A new Automatic Blade Positioning system also makes the operator's job easier. It automatically lowers the blade when the machine is shifted forward and raises it in reverse, improving operator comfort and productivity. To further reduce fatigue, a kickout feature allows the operator to raise and lower the blade without having to hold the joystick in place.

The cooling system on the 836H has also been updated. This machine now features as standard equipment, extreme service, six-fins-per-inch Next Generation Modular Radiator copper-alloy cores, copper-brazed for high joint integrity. The tubes, side sheets, header plate and tank are made of brass for extra durability. This radiator provides better cooling capabilities and is easier to service than previous designs. Cooling capabilities and operating efficiency have also been enhanced through the used of a demand fan that automatically adjusts fan speed to match coolant temperature.

Caterpillar 836H Landfill Compactor

For easier service access, pressure taps for the Electronic Clutch Pressure Control transmission have been relocated to a convenient spot behind the cab.

Valuable options

Caterpillar 836H can now be equipped with a 27 yd 3 (21 m 3) Semi U blade, complementing the Straight and U blade options available on the previous model. Optional High Intensity Discharge (HID) lights are available to enhance safety and visibility at night or in low light conditions. HID lights are six times brighter than conventional lights. The new landfill compactor can be outfitted with an optional Product Link system from Caterpillar. Product Link uses satellite technology and the Internet to monitor machine location, service meter hour and product health information. The machine also comes equipped with all the brackets and wiring necessary to install the Computer Aided Earthmoving System (CAES) from Caterpillar. CAES is an automated production tool that combines onboard sensors, advanced control systems and GPS technology to improve efficiency and reduce operating costs.
